Balloons carrying a large quantity of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was forced to close for several hours when numerous of them entered the national airspace.
Flight Disruptions
The operational halt led to thirty canceled flights disrupting thousands of passengers, with airport representatives alerting that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Officials confirmed that 25 meteorological balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with two balloons ending up right above the main terminal.
Up to 14 of the weather balloons sent during the weekend drifted across the Vilnius area, which is situated near Lithuania's capital city and adjacent to the Belarusian boundary.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
At least 11 balloons transporting numerous containers of black-market cigarettes have been collected so far, though this number could rise, according to law enforcement authorities.
International Illegal Trade
Although causing problems, officials emphasized that "Balloons with contraband - Belarusian smoking products - are not unusual in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
Since January, over five hundred weather devices have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were documented the previous year.
Cross-Border Effects
Meanwhile, the north-eastern Polish territory, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has documented over one hundred incidents in which illegal goods were transported from its border nation utilizing the balloons.
Illegal Transport Methods
In response to questions about why criminals use a method that is highly susceptible to weather elements rather than simpler to operate drones, representatives elaborated that "Atmospheric equipment are simple mechanisms used by contraband transporters - they are less expensive than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Representatives further stated that "Our services' aim is to confiscate the maximum possible quantities of contraband and to arrest masterminds and perpetrators so that this activity become unprofitable and present no risk to passenger aircraft."
International Concerns
The recent incidents occur during a period of increased concerns in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have created aviation problems across the region.
Similar occurrences in nearby states have led European authorities to speed up talks about strengthening air defences throughout the continent.
