RAF Typhoon FGR4s have conducted a mission with France's air force in a joint strike on an subterranean weapons facility in Syrian territory employed by the Daesh militant organization, per a report from the UK's MoD.

The facility, pinpointed through surveillance, was thought to be containing munitions and bombs, the statement said, and was located in mountainous terrain just north of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"Our fighter planes employed laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to hit a several entry passages down to the site... early reports indicate the strike was effective," the MoD said.

There was no evidence of any civilian casualties in the strike late on Saturday and each participating jet made a safe return, the defence officials confirmed.

The British jets were supported by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

Daesh - also known as the so-called Islamic State - established militant control over large swathes of Syria and Iraq before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This strike shows the UK's leading role, and commitment to work closely with allied nations, to eliminate any re-emergence of the terrorist group and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the region," UK Defence Secretary John Healey said.

British military aircraft have conducted patrols over Syrian airspace to "forestall any attempted comeback" of the group subsequent to its defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the ministry said.

"I want to thank all the members of our armed forces involved in this strike for their professionalism and their courage," the Defence Secretary said. "Including them were numerous UK service members on duty over the festive period. This operation, to remove terrorist threats who pose a risk to our security, shows how our armed forces are prepared to act, all year round, keeping Britain secure within its borders and influential overseas."

During December, the American forces executed what it termed a "massive strike" against Daesh sites in Syria, subsequent to an ambush killed two American soldiers and a local interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The U.N. reports Islamic State still boasts an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 combatants in Iraq and Syria.
