Wimbledon Embraces Video Challenge Technology in 2025.

The Championships court with video review system

The tournament joins the American and Aussie Opens in implementing video review technology.

Replay systems will be launched at Wimbledon for the 2025 edition.

Competitors are granted the option to question certain rulings made by the official, mirroring the protocol currently in place at both the US Open and the Australian Open.

This technology will be operational on Centre Court and the number one court for the duration of the tournament and on the remaining show courts when they are staging singles matches.

This step comes just a season following the All England Club implemented electronic line calling, which terminated the longstanding role of line officials.

Scope of Challenges

Competitors will not be permitted to challenge the accuracy of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to ask for the official to re-examine other situations, such as:

  • Whether a tennis ball has double-bounced.
  • If a shot made contact with an opponent's racquet or person during play.
  • Potential hindrance at the conclusion of a point.

Notably, there is no cap on the number of reviews a player can ask for.

Practical Application

An illustrative example occurred in a recent tournament last week, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the review system against his opponent.

The British player admitted it was a difficult situation for the umpire, but believed his rival had "used the regulations effectively."

The umpire viewed a replay and ruled Draper was responsible for interference, granting the point to Medvedev.

Broader Adoption

Video reviews aren't new for major tournaments. It was adopted at the American major since 2023 and the Australian Open this year.

Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour plans to have video reviews in place at every one of its events.

Additional Innovations

A further innovation at Wimbledon this year involves the introduction of graphical cues on displays to support the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.

This addresses situations where fans have sometimes been unsure whether a ball was in or out.

Finally, with exactly 100 days remaining until the beginning of the Championships, organizers have further revealed an increase in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
